Professional Summary

JD Brisk’s business card simply reads “Entrepreneur — Inventor — Philosopher.” A businessman since the age of six to a founder of a publicly traded software company and vice president of a $2 billion international IT company who managed $20 million in revenue with hundreds of employees located throughout the world, JD has been “takin’ care of business” for a half century. But even with all this success, he still doesn’t know what he wants to be when he grows up.

JD has been working in real estate for more than 30 years, transacting thousands of acres. Initially with agricultural and recreational properties and property management and maintenance, JD has worked in all areas of commercial real estate, including leasing, sales, investments and development. JD developed 320 acres into premier recreational properties, participated in the design and managed the construction of three large commercial buildings, and is currently responsible for the renovation of a historic office. His next development of the tallest class-A office building between Salt Lake and Vegas and some residential high-rise apartments are in the works. He is responsible for the  technical management for over $20 million in real estate assets.

After leaving college, a few years at some startup companies and running businesses of his own, he was eventually recruited by Novell’s engineering department and became one of Mr. Noorda’s go-to guys. Mr. Noorda became his main financier when he co-found KeyLabs in January of 1996 (later sold to Exodus Communications). There he built the IT industry’s largest independent testing facility. JD pioneered the concept of behavioral testing and was the first commercial adopter of P2P on the Internet to improve performance websites, giving him access to millions of computers worldwide. He co-founded Altiris in 1998 (which went public in 2002 and was later sold to Symantec), which was a key player in the software PC management arena. He bought KeyLabs back from Exodus just before the high-tech meltdown and sold it again four years later. The successful re-launch of NYMEX after 9/11 and MSNBC’s ability to stream the 2002 Olympic Games were recognizable fruits of his team’s labors.

JD was the featured executive in the May 1999 issue of Utah Business Magazine, nominated for Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2000, his company KeyLabs was recognized by the Utah County Entrepreneurial Forum as being number 4 in the top 25 companies under 5 years old. He was a founding member of Westminster College’s Technology Commercialization and Entrepreneurship Advisory Boards and is a board member and director of a few other entities.

JD volunteers his leadership with organizations like the Boy Scouts and for the past 18 years has developed and oversees the Volunteers in Police Service program for the Orem Department of Public Safety. For three years, he consulted nationally with the International Association of Chiefs of Police, where he instructed police departments how to utilize civilians in non-hazardous aspects of police work. As a novice-yet-published author, he has written many trade articles and pens an occasional article for The Utah Peace Officer Magazine just for fun.

On a personal note, JD believes the work done within the walls of his own home far overshadows any of his business successes. He is a devoted father, grandfather, friend and leader of youth. Working is the best way he knows to relax and is one of his favorite hobbies. He is an avid sportsman who loves “brisk” mountain air, extreme motorsports, collecting classic cars, the ping of a two-stroke engine and the smell of freshly torched gunpowder.
