Hamburg is Germany’s second-largest city and one of Europe’s most attractive economic hubs. The service sector is the city’s most important industry, accounting for roughly three-quarters of the workforce. One DAX-30 company, four MDAX companies and seven SDAX companies are headquartered in Hamburg, and the city is also home to a number of start-ups. Hamburg’s leading industries include the port sector and logistics as well as aviation, life sciences and the media and IT sectors.
With around 1.7 million inhabitants, Hamburg ranks second in Germany in terms of population, right behind the country’s capital. That makes the port city an important office location not only for German but also for international players from all industries. Young companies with innovative business models are increasingly attracted to the city on the Elbe River. That means a variety of office types are in high demand, from state-of-the-art penthouse offices to charming turn-of-the century office space.
Hamburg’s population and purchasing power makes it an attractive destination for retailers. Neuer Wall is Hamburg’s world-famous luxury shopping location. Numerous international and German luxury brands have flagship stores there. Spitalerstraße is the city’s top young fashion destination and enjoys high footfall. Stores run by German and international young fashion brands line the street door to door. Jungfernstieg has a reputation as the city’s oldest and best-known shopping location. Hamburg’s luxury department store, Das Alsterhaus, is surrounded by numerous premium brands.
