The Horse and Groom at Upper Oddington has been sold to Drunken Sailor Holidays Ltd. following a deal brokered by Colliers International acting on behalf of Old Amersham Hotels.
The archetypal English village inn is believed to date from 1580 and is built of Cotswold stone with exposed walls, beams and flagstones throughout. It has seven letting rooms, five in the main house and two in ‘The Cottage’ and is very well presented.
With an upmarket village location in Gloucestershire, close to the Cotswolds hotspot of Stow-on-the-Wold, the Horse and Groom sold off an asking price of £850,000 for the Freehold.
Norman Liu from Drunken Sailor Holidays said: “We loved the idea of running an English country pub. Having entered the hospitality business we will bring our enthusiasm and excitement to create a truly unique visit.
“Many pubs in the city are soulless – you eat, you drink, you leave. We want to create a memorable dining experience mixing fusion cuisine with fantastic local produce, such as Gloucester Old Spot pork, to make the Horse and Groom that little bit more different and exciting. We strive to source as much of our produce within a 50-mile radius of the pub.”
He went on: “We loved visiting the area but during our visits it was apparent there were few opportunities to stay over if you have a dog. We were determined to change that and from now on the two rooms in The Cottage will be dog friendly.
“In addition, we will provide a healthy dog menu, so owners don’t have to worry about spending too long away from home. We will also have a local artist to sketch portraits of dogs to hang on one of the walls, to be called ‘Our Village Dogs’. As we have a rescue dog, all profits will be going to the Dogs Trust, which is based 16 miles away in Evesham.”
Peter Brunt, a Director with global real estate advisor Colliers International’s Hotels team, says the Horse and Groom’s location and facilities underlined its credentials as a respected gastro-pub.
“The Horse and Groom is situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty just over a mile from Stow-on-the-Wold, close to Cheltenham, Cirencester, Woodstock, Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick.
“There was a lot of interest in the business from the market. Quality freeholds like these are rarely available, so this is a wonderful opportunity for buyers to acquire one of the very best pubs in the Cotswolds.”
The Grade II listed property has four public areas including a bar and stylish restaurant. The two other rooms are flexible and can be used as further dining or lounge spaces. There is seating for a total of about 86 people.
