Scholarship open to third and fourth year Lincoln University students

Colliers International’s Rural and Agribusiness Valuation division is pleased to announce applications are now open for the 2018 Colliers Rural and Agribusiness Valuation Scholarship.

The scholarship, which covers tuition fees up to $2500, is offered for the fifth consecutive year in 2018.

It is open to Lincoln University students in their third or fourth year of study towards a Bachelor of Land and Property Management (BLPM) degree.

Colliers International Valuation and Advisory Services Director Tim Crighton says the scholarship aims to reward excellence in the study of rural valuation.

“The scholarship is a great opportunity for students to get experience at the largest specialised rural valuation firm during their studies, and to help them launch into a rural valuation career,” he says.

“No one has done it alone and when it comes to demanding projects, you are only as good as the team you lead.

“Developing a highly competent, experienced, well-resourced team of valuers and mentoring young people entering the field has always been a priority and at the heart of the success of our team. The scholarship is only a small part of these efforts.”

This sentiment is also shared by Associate Director Greg Petersen, who will oversee this years’ application process.

“Good people are at the heart of every success story. But they are hard to find and require a stimulating environment to be retained.

“We endeavour to provide young people with opportunities to enter the profession and support them to succeed.”

Petersen says this is why the team will consider offering the right candidate exposure to the ins and outs of the rural valuation field through paid work placements during their studies.

The firm also offers graduate positions each year and its scholarship recipients are always in the best position to be offered employment.

Valuer Kate Day joined the team in 2016 and she was not disappointed.

“I was the happy recipient of the 2015 scholarship. It helped me during my studies and it also put me in good stead for entering the workforce, as I was employed by them after graduation.

"Not many people can boast that in their first month, their job took them from the hills of Southland to Dairy NZ conferences, client functions and PINZ meetings, even to the bowling green and the finish line of City2Surf.

“The most exciting part however, is how future oriented the company is and that it provides clear pathways going forward to aspire to, whilst still providing scope for each person to delve further into aspects of the industry they are interested in.”

Valuer Jack Powell, who has been with the team for more than three years now, says the team is an exciting place to start your career.

“Valuation isn’t all paperwork and office computers. Over the past three years I have been able to travel with the senior valuers across the South Island and parts of the North Island inspecting large scale dairy farms and extensive high-country stations.

“Valuing properties of this scale does come with the perks of the odd helicopter ride across some remote countryside which I may never have been able to experience elsewhere.”

Powell says Colliers International provides a wide scope of opportunities to expand your skills and establish yourself in an area of interest, almost anywhere in New Zealand.

“I am just weeks away now from sitting my registration exam and the senior valuers have put a great deal of time and effort mentoring me to ensure I am well prepared.”

Eligible candidates must be in their third and fourth year of study towards a BLPM, strive for academic excellence, and have interest in pursuing a career in rural valuation.

Good communication and interpersonal skills will also be taken into consideration along with a candidate’s potential to succeed.

The scholarship is open to New Zealand permanent residents and citizens. The deadline for 2018 applications is 20 August.

Kate Day

Kate completed her B. Com. Ag majoring in Agricultural Management and Rural Valuation from Lincoln University in 2015.

Growing up on an extensive sheep and beef property in Southland has given Kate invaluable hands on experience and understanding of the primary sector. Kate has always had a passion for property and the rural sector  and is now working towards becoming a fully registered valuer.

Kate began working as  Research Analyst at the Colliers Rural Valuation division in Christchurch in 2016.

Greg Petersen

Greg is a registered rural valuer and has eleven years of valuation and property consultancy experience and has been based in our Christchurch office since 2011. Prior to joining the firm he worked for both the Office of Treaty Settlements and Quotable value.

Greg specialises in the valuation of rural property throughout Canterbury and the South Island. His work for the firm has included financial reporting valuations of large scale rural portfolio’s, compensation assessments for major infrastructure projects and one off individual farm valuations for lending, estate and development purposes.

Greg offers our clients excellent technical skills and he has a highly developed understanding of the public sector and relevant legislation. He plays a lead role in our corporate dairy farm valuation work, infrastructure compensation and in other valuation practice areas.
