A passion for doing what’s right underpins everything we do at Colliers. From respecting our internal relationships, to delivering enduring value to our clients; enhancing the quality of experiences in our communities defines our approach. This spirit is embodied perfectly in Lina Wong of the Corporate Solutions APAC team who has a passion for the important role of diversity and inclusion, in and out of the workplace. Talking about her experience with The Women’s Foundation’s (TWF) Mentoring Programme, we sit down with Lina to discuss what she’s learned, her role at Colliers and why she’s thriving as a real estate professional.

What’s your role with Corporate Solutions?

I act as a partner and advisor to our major regional clients, creating real estate solutions delivered from our integrated platform across APAC. My role has undergone a slight evolution since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Clients’ needs have evolved which has meant our solutions have had to adapt and be flexible to occupier needs. We have been advising our clients to take a ‘bigger picture’ approach; now is the time to review portfolios and cost optimisation strategies, as well as to conduct workplace studies to identify unique workplace experience for employees. It’s not just about reducing cost; it’s about creating the right environment and a better experience for employees to return to the office and its future use.

How did you get into real estate and do you enjoy it so far?

My family comes from a real estate background. Over the years, I became interested and started learning about the industry and markets - I love the dynamic landscape, especially in Hong Kong. I really enjoy the fact real estate is a people business. It involves meeting and engaging with new people, networks, and communities constantly. I also believe the people inside the buildings are just as important, if not more important, than the building itself.

Last year, you participated the Mentoring Programme organised by The Women’s Foundation (TWF). Could you share your experience and takeaways from it?

I joined the programme as a protégé, and I was paired with a senior executive mentor. We met on a regular basis to discuss opportunities, challenges and develop action plans, as well as work on different ways to improve our effectiveness and productivity - both personally and professionally.

The role ended up expanding beyond just one-to-one mentoring. Throughout the year-long period, I also took part in various personal and professional development activities, including peer-to-peer learning, mentoring circles, inspirational talks, panel discussions, skills-enhancement workshops, and networking events.

In addition, as part of the programme, I committed to giving back to the TWF community in meaningful ways. This led to becoming involved with women driven initiatives and activities outside TWF such as the joining the TEDxTin Hau Committee.

The whole experience has been inspiring. It has allowed me to examine best practices in empowering women in the workplace and not only apply it into my work style, but make sure it’s present in what I deliver to clients. At Colliers, I’m proud to work in an environment that has committed to promoting the advancement of women and supports creating equal opportunities.
