Colliers International grows South Florida office with three of the area’s top retail brokers
Jonathan D. Carter, David Preston and Jenny Gefen are among leading retail brokers in the region
MIAMI, Fla. – (Jan. 22, 2019) – Colliers International continues to expand its South Florida retail services platform by adding a dynamic team of three of the region’s top retail brokers – Jonathan D. Carter, David Preston and Jenny Gefen.
The move solidifies Colliers’ position as South Florida’s leading retail brokerage group. In November, Colliers acquired dominant retail and office services firm CREC, led by co-founders Warren Weiser and Carol Greenberg Brooks. The acquisition merged over 12 million square feet of high profile retail, office, and industrial space into the Colliers portfolio, along with a highly accomplished team of industry professionals and top dealmakers.
Carter joins Colliers with over 15 years of retail leasing and sales experience, most recently at The Comras Company where he was Managing Director of retail leasing. Preston joins from Newmark Knight Frank, where over the past eight years he has practiced as Senior Managing Director alongside Gefen, who has quickly established herself as one of the most talented and versatile retail brokers in the market.
“Colliers is attracting the best and the brightest in the retail industry to help our investor and occupier clients create value and seize market opportunities,” said Ryan Kratz, President of Colliers International’s Southeast Region. “Colliers’ retail practice statewide now leads the industry with 50 brokers, millions of square feet of property management, and over 100 exclusive tenant representation accounts consisting largely of national retailers.”
Jonathan D. Carter focuses on landlord and tenant representation, and investment sales of high density urban and lifestyle oriented projects situated in South Florida’s most prominent vertical environments. Carter leads a deep portfolio of high profile urban core leasing and sale efforts from Miami Beach to Brickell/Downtown, Wynwood, and Aventura. His unique ability to provide not only vast knowledge but also complete access to Miami’s leading urban and transformative lifestyle markets has made him one of the most sought-after retail brokers in the market.
Prior to his role as Managing Director of Retail Leasing at Comras Company, Carter was a member of the retail leasing team at Cushman & Wakefield after starting his career at Schottenstein Realty Company. He holds a master’s degree from University of Miami, and Bachelor of Arts in Economics from The American University.
David Preston brings with him over 16 years of South Florida retail brokerage experience, primarily representing major retailers, restaurants, and financial institutions on multi-unit rollouts, in addition to urban and suburban landlord representation, acquisition, disposition, investment sales, and development. Over the course of his career, he has been directly responsible for retail lease and sale transactions in excess of $365 million.
A South Florida native and University of Florida graduate, his deep knowledge of the market, diverse skillset, and a forensic understanding of retailer performance and traffic patterns give him the ability to transact at a high level across a wide array of properties and asset classes, from outparcel to urban and open-air and mixed use, in today’s ever-changing retail environment.
Preston’s clients include Orvis, Benihana Inc., Franklin Templeton, BankUnited, BB&T, Higher Ground Education, Pure Hockey, Skilken Gold, SPiN, ITSUGAR, and Yolk.
Jenny Gefen has over 10 years of experience in new business development, site selection management, and strategic real estate strategies, working with both landlord and tenants. Gefen specializes in advising retail and restaurant private equity and high-growth companies in their expansions throughout the South Florida market, particularly in high density, urban settings.
Gefen’s clients include Bolay, Checkers, Del Taco, Golftec, Jersey Mike’s, Pieology, Salata, Tapout and Yolk, to name a few. Gefen previously worked at Cushman & Wakefield, representing Fortune 500 companies. Gefen has a bachelor’s degree from Florida International University.
