Iconic Campus of South Philadelphia Undergoing Bold Redevelopment Plan
December 4, 2019 [Philadelphia, PA] – Colliers International has been selected as exclusive agent in the marketing of office/flex space at the Quartermaster, an iconic campus of six buildings encompassing one million square feet of available space over 24 acres, located at 2800 S. 20th Street in the Girard Estate neighborhood of South Philadelphia. The assignment comes at an exciting time for the Quartermaster which is undergoing a bold redevelopment plan.
The Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot, an expansion of the Schuylkill Arsenal dating back to the early 1800’s, was built at its current location in 1918 as America joined the fray of WWI – outfitting the doughboys of that era. It went on to be the largest purchaser and maker of textile products in the world and likened to a “little Pentagon.” It’s historically significant art deco buildings and central clocktower designed by Ballinger sit at the heart of the complex that was supported by its own railroad system, police and fire protection. At the height of wartime efforts the depot employed up to 15,000 Philadelphians.
This storied campus, home to Homeland Security’s Delaware Valley Intelligence Center (DVIC) and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Regional Job Corps Training Center remains driven by its original sense of productivity and community and is proudly readying to serve a new generation as a unique and vibrant destination.
Quartermaster owner Sky Management has partnered with architecture firm Digsau and is currently implementing the following capital improvements expected to be completed by Spring 2020:
- Substantial greening, hardscaping and artistic improvements along the central avenue
- A complete renovation of the gatehouse as a modern design center, event and meeting space
- Reconceiving the Sycamore Grove with design-forward lighting and furniture to create a comfortable and collaborative outdoor environment
Subsequent imminent improvements include a substantial investment in modern LED lighting illuminating the Clocktower to serve as a beacon to the complex and provide ability to support teams and causes throughout the year with programmable colors. Request for proposals to the art community related to custom murals and installations are anticipated to be distributed later this year.
“We are very excited to reintroduce the Quartermaster as a beautifully reimagined campus. The opportunities for companies of every type and size are endless. With newly activated outdoor areas for community events, a fitness center, and on-site parking, we have a truly unique offering within the City of Philadelphia.” cited Elizabeth Morrow, Vice President of Colliers. She and Ina Sargen, a Senior Vice President with Colliers will be responsible for leasing at the project.
