New construction heats up across West Michigan's industrial market

ECONOMIC UPDATE

West Michigan's industrial sector is thriving with continued job creation from regional, national, and international manufacturing and distribution companies. As the sector continues to grow, Michigan has taken steps to strengthen the state's talent pipeline. Employers are responding by offering career exploration and talent development opportunities for students.

According to Governor Rick Snyder's Marshall Plan for Talent, which was signed into law in June, there will be more than 800,000 high-demand career openings through 2024 in fields including manufacturing, IT, and computer science, health care, and other professional trades. Employers across West Michigan are taking a proactive approach to recruiting the next generation of talent. For example, Grand Rapids-based Wolverine Coil Spring Co. has offered factory tours to many high school groups to give them a firsthand look at manufacturing careers.
