Southern Nevada’s economy continued to expand in the second quarter of 2018, but that expansion also continued to slow. While most measures of economic performance are positive, including employment, taxable sales and gaming revenue, visitor volume has been in a multi-month slide.

Unemployment in the Las Vegas-Paradise MSA stood at 5.0 percent as of April 2018, up from 4.8 percent in April 2017. Unemployment peaked in Southern Nevada at 14.0 percent in January 2011, and has been generally headed down ever since. The area’s previous low unemployment was 3.7 percent in December 2005. The latest national unemployment figure was 3.9 percent in April 2018, down from 4.4 percent in April 2017. The national labor force participation rate decreased to 62.8 percent in April 2018, 0.1 point lower than in April 2017.
