Making a difference in Richmond

Richmond, Virginia

Richmond, the capital of Virginia, is among America’s oldest cities. Patrick Henry, a U.S. Founding Father, famously declared “Give me liberty or give me death” at its St. John's Church in 1775, leading to the Revolutionary War.

The Richmond region is a vibrant and growing community with nearly 1.3 million people, gaining 30 net new people daily. Our stable and diverse economy includes eight Fortune 500 headquarters, ranking second for the total number of firms compared to our peer cities. Our long-standing and affordable corporate tax rate of 6% hasn’t changed since 1972.

The region also offers some of the best communities to live. Richmond was rated one of the best small cities in North America, and the overall quality of life in Hanover County was rated as “excellent” or “good” by 95% of the residents. The village of Midlothian in Chesterfield County has been recognized as one of the nation’s 100 best places to live while Grayson Hill, a townhome community in Henrico for people 50 and older, won four national awards.

With an average 25-minute commute, the region offers the cultural and recreational opportunities of a large city with minimal traffic congestion. Atlantic beaches, Blue Ridge mountain ski slopes and hiking and Washington, D.C.'s cultural amenities are all within a two-hour drive.

Greater Richmond includes the City of Richmond and Chesterfield, Hanover and Henrico counties. The Richmond metropolitan statistical area (MSA) includes these localities plus the cities of Petersburg, Colonial Heights, Hopewell and the counties of Amelia, Caroline, Charles City, Dinwiddie, Goochland, King William, New Kent, Powhatan, Prince George and Sussex.
